Have you looked at:

http://www.htmlarea.com/

It has a nice comprehensive listing of all the
different WYSIWYG editors currently out there that
have been registered with that site. I've been using
Kevin Roth's X-browser RTE
(http://www.kevinroth.com/rte) with variating degrees
of success, as well as others.

I've found that while overriding certain functionality
is relatively easy if you're familiar with DOM, some
of the behaviors seem very embedded within somewhere
that's not easily accessible within the code of the
editor.

For example, changing the font for a selection... In
Kevin Roth's RTE, a call is made to
document.execCommand(). I'm not quite sure *why* this
will format the selection as [font face="whatever"
size="some_number"]selected text[/font]. Is there
somewhere out there that defines execCommand a little
better so we can understand what's going on?

Like you, I've been having to write "cleaner
components" that will "scrub" the resulting HTML back
into a style that I like.

Best of luck in your search.
