You will have to free up space on the partition or resize the partition to a larger size. There are a few linux boot disks out there that do a pretty good job. Just google "linux boot disk resize partition". One warning. MAKE A BACKUP!!! Messing with your partitions is risky stuff, especially resizing them. It is real easy to mess something up and loose the drive. You have been warned. Also a quick linux note. It is not necessary to have different parts of the file system in different partitions. In the install you can usually choose to install all of the file system into one big partition. There are pros/cons to both ways so you might want to do some research. One thing I can tell you is that you are not going to have the issue you just described except for one case, the drive is full.
