Dunno.
But as you said, the first episode is generally introductory and sometimes those get pretty awkward. Hopefully things will get better as the plot starts to develop. And the bit with the main character seeing the mobile suit sounds as if it might actually be a neat little dangling plot hook, although I don't think it occupies much of the time in the episode.
From the sound of things, the first episode is the "blow stuff up and announce what the goal of the 'good guy faction' is" episode. Since there's no official villain faction at this time (we don't even know if any of the Earth groups are as bad as SEED's Atlantic Federation leadership), that's pretty much the most that I'd really expect.

Wow I was going to say the way it was written was kind of clumsy (not
the first time I use that word describing G00). Then I read the
summary on Gunota (from a whole week ago!) and boy it's just as
inauspicious. What's Mizushima doing? He put out all these
interesting ideas in interview etc but then episode 1 sounds like a
complete stinker.
