Another thought... this doesn't have to be done all at once, and
all the world's not .COM!

Look, for example at .NIC, which has been around for almost 4 years now.

A bunch of people thought it would be convenient to be able to find
a tld registry by giong to <tld>.nic or www.<tld>.nic. Even Postel
thought it was a cool idea but remarked "unfortuenately it's not
going to happen anytime soon".

Well, it's up, it's live it works and has for a while. It doesn't
cost anybody any money and since it only accepts registrations
of the form <tld>.nic I don't see any TM issues with it.

Maybe other people thing they should be able to get love-zoo.nic.

Well, ok, knock yourselves out, set up a .NIC zone and do that
and see if anybody recognizes it.

This is the great tragedy of the DNS mess. We're so wrapped up
in the CORE/NSI battle that we've completely lost sight of the
ideals of "service to the community" and making the internet
easier to use.

Nobody has ever registered a .nic name. They zone was created
by a bunch of people on the condition their names were never
made public for fear of being labeled a "rogue" or a "DNS pirate"

And thats a damn shame.

The old man was asked, why were these men and boys willing to stand up to the
mightiest army in the world? Was it the taxes on tea and other imports? No, he
said. Was it the thinking from all the great books coming from Europe? No, books
were rare and precious things which most couldn't afford. Then, he was asked again,
WHY? His answer was... "Because they were of a mind to govern us and we were of a
mind to govern ourselves."
