INTERNET ADDRESS SHORTAGE PUTS PRESSURE ON REGISTRATION FIRM
Network Solutions has come under criticism for attempting to
unfairly make profits off of simple domain names that are up for
resale and possibly even giving favor to insiders. In order to
make up for uncollected registration fees, Network Solutions had
announced its intentions to enter the resale market, which can
actually hold lucrative domain names because the domain names
that were registered earlier tend to be simple and short.
Competitors are upset that Network Solutions is not returning the
expired domain names to the general pool, and Network Solutions
agreed not to resell the expired domain names until ICANN meets
in November to work on new policies, although the registrar does
maintain that the two sides of its business remain distinct to
ensure that it does not gain any unfair advantages. Network
Solutions spokeswoman Cheryl Regan says the company is using the
new policy to repossess its assets and recoup losses
