The Wii is running a version of linux. You can install bash via the home brew browser and drop down the the shell. I would suggest not updating your wii when you first get it and install some apps called homebrew, bootmii and preloader. These apps will allow you to backup your system and restore it, in the case that you brick your system.
You may try using a program called sneek to boot from a sd card or usb drive. I'm in the process of installing sneek/uneek on my system to do nand emulation.
