Well I must say nothing has impressed me more in the war on spam than
ASSP[1]. Not much for perl, or how its written/maintained. But its a
great application, and the most effective tool I have found. I learned
about it long ago on this list from Gene Cronk.
I was using qmail-scanner with spamassassin, clamav, and several other
applications which names I have since forgotten. It was ridiculous, was
using like 20mb per email just for spam stuff.
With ASSP I used to use it with clamav, but found its so good at
detecting spam, which most virus emails are similar in nature to, if not
spam. There really was no need for clamav, it did not provide any
additional benefit. Nothing ended up in the virus folder like ever.
The only trick to ASSP is in the training period, building your spam
keyword/bayesian database. Though later versions of ASSP rely less and
less on the bayesian database. Few things should be caught by that, but
it still does catch things. Though at times it is also responsible for
most false positives as well. Such as in the case of the JaxLUG mailing
list. Though still on avg ~2-3 emails per day are caught by the bayesian
filter. Much less all the other attempts.
