I have a temperature dilemma in one of my small server rooms. I have about 15u of computer equipment (2x servers, 1x SAN, 1x Firewall, couple switches and some ISP hardware (T1 boxes, fiber modems, etc..)) that needs to be chilled. Since this is all in a relatively empty 52u enclosed rack (with some vents on the front and back), I am looking for a directional portable unit that can be installed and used. My budget is minimal (sub- $500) and I am having trouble finding something better than some units from Home Depot (for that price).
My ideals include (but are way to expensive) http://www.movincool.com/portable-air-conditioner/# http://www.coldair.net/portable-air-conditioners/ but I feel I might end up getting something along the lines of http://www.amazon.com/Whynter-Eco-Friendly-Portable-Conditioner-ARC-12SD/dp/B003MQBYYU/ The unfortunate thing about most residential units are that the vents cannot be easily directed into a hose (for moving into the rack) and the units are not block shaped (which would sit well in the bottom of a rack. I appreciate any thought that you all might have. Used hardware that might be sitting around is also welcome. (As of right now, with the building A/C mostly deactivated for the evening (out of my control) and the room sitting mostly sealed, SAN is detecting an output temperature at the PSU of 60C / 141.8F. Intake Temp on one of the servers is 34C) Michael Potts GV: (904) 638-2914 | Gtalk: [email protected] @HMHackMaster | http://about.me/MichaelPotts
