JonathanI have owned a Thnkpad T400 for 3+ years now and I am very happy with it.I currently use Ubuntu 10.04 (waiting on the next LTS version 12.04)and everything worked out the box.My laptop doesn't have a fingerprint reader, but it has integratedwebcam, smartcard reader and 2 graphic cards Intel (integrated andshared memory) and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 with 256 Mb.The Intel video card has enough power to move Compiz and all thedesktop effects you want, but if you like to play games or do somegraphics work you may want to use the ATI one. Also, although there isa free ATI driver, I would recommend you to install the propetary onefrom the AMD website. The Wifi card is an Intel 5300. I have played with differentmonitoring tools and sniffers, aircrack, etc and I had no problem.I also have bluetooth integratred and it works as well. I have beenable to do tethering with my phone through bluetooth as well as wifi. The only "problem" I found something you can do with Windows, but notwith Linux, as far as I know and this is to switch between the graphiccards via software. In windows, you can jump from using the Intelvideo card (consume less battery) to use the ATI, whenever you needmore graphic power, so you have to decide which one you want to use. As I said my laptop is 3+ years old, so whatever Thinkpad you buy willhave newer hardware and you may or may not run into compatibilityissues. So you may want to check this websitehttp://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkWiki to know better the hardwarecompatibility. Anyway Thinkpad laptops have always been pretty "Linux friendly". I hope this helps.Rafa On Tue, Jan 3, 2012 at 7:27 PM, Jonathan Cohen <[email protected]> wrote: > Well that ThinkPad got sold, but I'm in the market at this time for a new > computer and I notice some members of JaxLUG has ThinkPads.
