In most cases, OpenOffice meets or exceeds what I need from MS-Office and has the additional benefit that it runs native on Linux.
One notable disappointment, however, is the ease of scriptability. Having just slogged through what should have been a fairly simple effort, I thought I'd leave an better-marked trail for anyone who might come after.
