Depending on the age of the system you're trying to do this on, you might 
achieve success by turning on LBA mode in the PC's BIOS.  If that's not 
possible, I believe Maxtor drives of that era had a "cylinder cap" jumper 
that made the drive pretend to be smaller (32Gb, maybe?) - you could try 
this, too.
