I used a Linksys USB 10/100 ethernet adapter to talk a 6Mbps DSL
connnection in a Multi-WAN setup on pfSense 1.2 for 2 years, 4 or
5 years ago.  The machine no longer exists.  We didn't notice any
problems with it.  YMMV.
