I updated the VM to the latest build and set the kern.timecounter.hardware
i8254 and still have a peaked CPU. Any suggestions?

Here's my command prompt dump:

kern.timecounter.choice: TSC(800) ACPI-fast(1000) HPET(900) i8254(0)
dummy(-1000000)
kern.timecounter.hardware: i8254

and confirming that the VM tools are running:

$ ps ax|grep vmware
30579 ?? S 0:00.00 sh -c ps ax|grep vmware
30761 ?? R 0:00.00 sh -c ps ax|grep vmware
63096 ?? I 0:00.93 /usr/local/bin/vmtoolsd -c /usr/local/share/vmware-to

Try:
System: Advanced: System Tunables

Name Value
kern.timecounter.hardware i8254

Oops - I had it started in safe mode.

Here's the normal startup:

kern.timecounter.choice: TSC(800) ACPI-fast(1000) HPET(900) i8254(0)
dummy(-1000000)

How can I change that?

That's a pretty bare list. How did you setup this VM? What VMware hardware
version is it set to? Is ACPI enabled in the VM settings?
