Thank you all for your answers! (and thanks a lot Georg for the good
address!) It seems I've touched a sensible subject...
In fact the solution proposed by my client is a terrible one (yeah!
clients that make technical decisions! where are we going to?! ;-) : it puts
the whole content of the page in a single cell table, and in this cell he adds
an empty div to force the min-width (and all that in a wonderfully tableless
site :-((( Their solution presents the two "derivations" : bad use of tables
and of divs....
As for much of your answers, even if it would be better not to use
javascript expressions in the CSS, that seems to be a good, logical solution
for IE6 and later (expecting that IE7 will correctly support max/min-width).

Yes but he's talking about using a DIV to force open an area of the
page. It doesn't matter if you use a div or a table because in both
cases you're using an HTML element as presentation (even if you can't
see it).
