I'm in the same boat as Elle. I'm working on a site for a private school.

I agree with Mr. Veen about the vernacular involved. I tried Drupal once and
couldn't get past the "node" this and "block" that. What brought me back to
Drupal was a failed attempt at making WordPress (looked like a blog and not a
website, the event calendar is really weak and forget about volunteers - it is
the best blog software IMHO), an article at IBM's Developer web site
(http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/ibm/osource/implement.html) and the
Drupal book by David Mercer.

You'll find that everything you try will get you to 80% and that's very
frustrating. Just find something that you're comfortable installing and
maintaining. They're free - download them and play with them.
