This is a one-way list for WSG Announcements
**************************************************************
Hi everyone,
Peter mentioned the forthcoming WSG forum in a previous announcement.
Well, the WSG Core team has been busy putting it through its paces over
the past few weeks, and it's finally ready for prime time - just a few
days behind the planned launch date:
http://forum.webstandardsgroup.org/
The intention of this forum is not to replace the mail list, rather to
complement it. Reasons why you might post something on the forum, rather
than the list, include:
* the topic falls into that grey area of possibly being off-topic
* the topic is *definitely* off-topic (i.e. what movie you saw last week)
* you began a discussion at a WSG event, and want to continue that
discussion online
* you prefer using a web-based forum rather than email as a medium for
discussion
* you want to be one of the cool kids to create the first post in one of
the forum's categories
The forum has most of the standard features that you would expect, and a
few cool ones that you probably wouldn't:
* category-based organisation (that movie discussion would belong in
"General Chat" by the way)
* RSS and Atom feeds, if you'd like to keep on top of discussions using
your feed reader
* ability to use some HTML in posts, to format how your post is displayed
* ability to send "whispers" (private messages) to other forum members
* ability to block categories that you are not interested in
* ability to pull your Flickr feed into your personal profile (cool, huh?)
Some important points about the forum:
* Your forum login and membership details are quite independent of your
WSG login. Subscribing/unsubscribing from one has NO impact on the other.
* There may still be a few features added or categories changed over
time. Feel free to leave feedback about the forum in the "Feedback"
category.
* While the forum certainly has a more lax approach to what is
considered off-topic than the mail list, this does not mean that
anything goes. There is an active group of WSG Core members who will
delete posts and ban members for stepping beyond what is deemed
acceptable online behaviour. Please read the terms of service before
registering:
http://forum.webstandardsgroup.org/termsofservice.php
We think that this forum will be another terrific medium for
standards-related discussions. However, for the forum to grow as a
community, it needs your involvement. A friendly community, ready to
answer your every question, has already begun posting to the forum. So
sign up and join in!
Kind regards,
Matthew Magain
