Surely the point here is to provide information to the site user so that they know what is going to happen: "this link will open in a new window" or "after following this link, press your Back button to return to this page". Or similar. Ricky

However, from a user-friendly perspective, it is very annoying to close a window and realise that you have lost where you were.
