Thanks for asking Aaron :)
We don't use this feature today but are planning on PoC'ing it for the server
team.
Our server team wanted to use a generalized VHDX associated with a VMM template
to provision virtual servers to reduce the time it takes to provision a server.
As opposed to running an entire deployment task sequence on a bare-metal VM.
They were thinking about using the ConfigMgr OSD process we have in place
today in order to deploy to a bare-metal VM, manually generalize, and add the
VHDX to the template. We already define our server OS deployment process, and
deploy and capture processes in task sequences to maintain consistency. So, I
was suggesting to the server team that we explore ConfigMgr's VHD-creation
feature and VMM integration in order to deliver a generalized VHD each time the
deployment process is revised or there are newly approved updates (using
offline servicing...AKA DISM offline... in VMM/CM for updates is not 100% clean
for all server OS' we support).
The server team's standard for the virtual hard disk's format for Hyper-V is
VHDX. The only way we can use this capability today is by having configmgr
generate the VHD, upload to VMM, then run a conversion process to make it a
VHDX. We want it to be a VHDX from the get-go as we don't understand if there
are any gotchas/risks for converting it and to simplify the process.
I envision they'll want to use the generalized VHDX for the same purpose in
Azure on-prem/cloud as well once the infrastructure is in place for us. It
would be great to have VHDX support and have integration into any Microsoft
Cloud/Virtual Host management platform supported such as VMM, WAP/Azure Stack,
and Azure.

Nope, currently VHD only. DCR is already there, so I duped out yours (but
Connect should pass through the status from the original). Currently no work
scheduled
 on the VHD feature.

For my curiosity, can you expand upon how you use this feature (or rather how
you
want to use it)?

Sorry if this has already been asked. According to blogs and the documentation
I only see references to VHD format. However, our standard for Hyper-V virtual
hard disks is the VHDX format. Does anyone know if VHDX's are currently
supported
or if VHDX format will be supported in any of the coming updates?

Thank you,

Stephen
