As long as you deploy all patches then removing superseded updates should be
fine. However, you can run into problems if you don’t.

For example, let's say you decide not to deploy SP1 for Office 2013 (yet), but
remove all Office 2013 superseded updates. The Office 2013 RTM updates are
superseded by SP1, so removing them isn't what you really wanted or intended.
You can manage this, but it gets to be very cumbersome very quickly because you
have to start managing your own supersedence rules.

Very helpful links guys, thanks! I’m definitely implementing the clean SUGs
console extension. Do you have any feedback on my concerns about deleting
superseded updates? We currently have the SUP supersedence rules configured as
‘immediately expire a superseded update’ so I guess it doesn’t matter too much.

Daniel.

We are encountering disk space issues so I’ve decided it might be time to clean
up the expired updates in our update packages :)

What’s the simplest way of accomplishing this? I was thinking I go into each
package, find the expired updates, edit their membership to remove them from
the SUGs and then delete them. There should be no risk in doing this because
expired updates cannot be deployed correct?

Should I also consider removing superseded updates or is there more of a risk
with those? Eg. unlike expired updates they’re still deployable so I risk
deleting a superseded update in which its successor might not have been
deployed!

Daniel.
