R2 is not free. You need to either purchase it, or have Software Assurance.

Subject: [mssms] Need Info on SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 install

Hello All,

Need your help in understanding whether I need the license for upgrading to
SCCM 2012 R2 SP1.
My site version is SCCM 2012 SP1 and I need to upgrade to 2012 R2 SP1. I can
download the 2012 R2 SP1 ISO file from the evaluation center but wanted to know
if we need the key as well to make it a full version (as it would be an eval
version with 180 days validity). I am of the impression that even if I install
the evaluation version of 2012 R2 SP1 I will be automatically converted to full
version as my base version (SCCM 2012 SP1) is already a full version.

Any help would be appreciated.

Syed.
