There is no name change. 1511 and 1602 are the versions. The name is
Configuration Manager Current Branch.

the 1602 Technical Preview
release<https://www.niallbrady.com/2016/02/18/system-center-configuration-manager-technical-preview-1602-is-now-available/>
is for lab use only, not for production, and the ability to install it on
Server 2008R2 and later migrate to Server 2012R2 came about due to uservoice as
you can see here >

https://configurationmanager.uservoice.com/forums/300492-ideas/suggestions/11046324-support-the-windows-server-os-being-upgraded-on-si
the hope/desire is that these cool new features that end up in the Technical
Preview later find their way into the production releases (Current Branch)
cheers

There was a thread few days back about SCCM 1602 not being able to install any
roles on Windows 2008 R2 boxes come 10/16. Is that why the in-place upgrade is
now being called out in this release?

I'll be honest I followed the thread, but still wasn't sure what the answer
was. Can you install SCCM 1602 roles on Windows 2008 R2?

With this name change every few months, it’s going to make it a nightmare to
find info when searching. I like that I can put in SCCM 2012 and get stuff
back from my searches.
