I settled on vSphere 6: Install, Configure, Manage, since we are upgrading to 6 soon enough. I was planning on actual classroom training, but as it turns out, New Horizons only has online training for this course from what I can see. Global Knowledge has sporadic live classroom training in my area over the next few months but the timing doesn’t work for me. I find it interesting that the fee for the course is the same whether it’s classroom or online (both New Horizons and Global Knowledge). I’m glad I held off because when I registered for VMWorld the other day, I saw the same course by New Horizons offered for $1000 less as an “add-on” to the VMWorld package. (The company is paying, but management is happy.) You need to take the course the week before VMWorld and it’s 4 days instead of 5 for some reason. If you are going to spend time in training for VMware, spend the $ for the officially sanctioned training that qualifies you to take the VCP exam, even if that is not your plan/goal right now. The VMware exams (unlike Microsoft and Cisco) actually require you to take certain classes before you can even register for the exam. Everything I have taken has been online, and I’ve been pleased. Just be aware that any one training course will only prepare you about 60-70% for the exam. Unless you eat and sleep vSphere in your day job, the course by itself will not be enough to pass the exam, unless perhaps you have a photographic memory There are at least two tracks that can prep you for the VCP – ICM (Install, Configure, Manage) and Fast Track. If you’ve got some hands on with vSphere, I would probably advise you to take the Fast Track. Let me know if you have other questions. My management wants me to become more involved in the day-to-day operations of our VMware environment and I’ve been asked to find something suitable to increase my skills. I haven’t spent a huge amount of time in classrooms during my IT career, but I’ve done it enough to know that the quality of training is all over the spectrum, and I would really hate to come out not knowing much more than I do now. If not VMware training specifically, I would be interested in hearing which training companies to avoid, as I think someone who has tried several of them may have a good general perspective. Thanks.
