I think he means instance name?

Sorry don't know what you mean by alias - Could you plz elaborate on that 
because there can be an alias for a colomn and there could be an alias for a 
table.

having a slight issue at the moment with an attempted installation of 
SharePoint onto a Development instance of SQL 2005 I've had my IT area open up 
the applicable port 1435 and am using the connection string in the server
