I would suggest that you try making the colunn up in the list itself, and seeing if that solves your problem. If this is a common column that you want to use in other lists in the future, you can always create a list template that includes the column, and then use that as the basis for you other future lists. Also, if you are viewing this list through a ListView webpart on a page, you have to edit the webpart's properties to point it to using the newly modified view (otherwise it uses its own copy of the view, pre-modification). We have started using tasks to organize ourselves. I have added a categories field to our task list. It shows up in outlook when I connect to it.
