Is there guidance for an integrated installation onto a clean server if
you were planning to have both the client and server components on it.
What would the install order be:
1. Integrated TFS 2008 SP1
2. Team Explorer 2008
3. VS 2008 SP1
Or
1. Team Explorer 2008
2. VS 2008 SP1
3. Integrated TFS 2008 SP1
Or doesn't it matter?
Cheers,
David Feilen

There are multiple ways to take a look at the compatibility:
Binary SxS (Side by Side) Compatibility
The readme is correct on this, if you have both the Client and
the Server bits on the same computer, you need to update both. As long
as the client and server bits are on separate computers, you can apply
the service packs independently.
Client/Server Compatibility

There is a dependency.
Bits from the install guide TFSInstall-SP1RTM-v080812.chm
(section: Installing Team Foundation Server and Service Pack 1)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ff12844f-398c-4

You must install SP1 in the following circumstances:
* You want to upgrade your deployment of Team Foundation
Server from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008. If you upgrade SQL
Server but do not install SP1 after the upgrade, Team Foundation Server
will no longer function.
* You want to install SP1 for Visual Studio 2008 on the
application-tier server for Team Foundation. If you install only one
service pack, you will create an unsupported configuration.
* You have a standby application-tier server, and the
primary application-tier server has or will have SP1 installed on it.
You must install SP1 on the standby application-tier server if you
install it on the primary server.
In deployments where the application tier and a client tier
component are installed on the same computer, you must install SP1 for
Visual Studio 2008 before you install SP1 for Team Foundation Server.
Otherwise, you will not be able to install SP1 for Team Foundation
Server.
For example, you should first install SP1 for Visual Studio 2008
and then install SP1 for Team Foundation Server on any server that is
running both Team Foundation Server and Team Explorer. If you try to
update Team Foundation Server first, the update will fail. If you update
Team Foundation Server but not Team Explorer, you will encounter errors
if you try to use that installation of Team Explorer to perform certain
administrative tasks on Team Foundation Server.

Raj

There is no dependency between the TFS and VS service pack
(confirmed by MSFT).
There is however a dependency between the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
and VS2008, because there are in the service pack new features that are
not supporeted in the .NET framework 3.5 RTM.

David,
Which way is the dependency?
Can I upgrade VSTS without upgrading TFS?
If I upgrade TFS I MUST upgrade VSTS?

Nope - they do have a dependency. You will need to upgrade these

Hi Grant,
I'm assuming that VS2008 SP1 can be applied without having TFS
2008 SP1.
Can you confirm that there is no dependency? If so, we will be
able to roll out VS2008 SP1 immediately, while TFS SP1 will be planned.
Cheers
Dave
