Hi,

Fascinating connection! We read Tuck at the end of the year. I have
"stations" as our culminating project. At one station they make
"baseball"-type character cards with the character of their choice. They
give them a nickname, list favorite song, etc. At another station they cast
a movie, choosing modern-day actors to play the parts. They have to support
their choice. At another, they paint their favorite scene with watercolors.
Then, they describe the scene using vivid, descriptive language. At another
they create a matrix with several of the characters and a character traits.
At another they make connections between three characters using sentence
strips as the connectors. They take two days to rotate through all of the
stations.

At the beginning of the unit, I ask them whether or not they would want to
live forever. (We make a big deal out of it. My co-teacher thought up the
idea of giving them each a small plastic cup with some water in it. We then
tell them....if you choose to drink this, you will live forever. Think
about what that will mean. (We discuss.) Then we say "Go" and they either
drink or leave it.) They then write about their decision and support it. I
keep these. At the end, the again write about their choice. I give them
back their original writing.

Another language arts teacher in the same grade also does a "Living Water
Ad" at the end of the unit. The kids have to create an ad for water that
will allow one to live forever. They are assigned an "audience" to whom
they will "appeal." (It's interesting to see the ads of those assigned to
50 year olds and those assigned to teens.) They use their newly acquired
knowledge of propaganda techniques to produce their poster/ad. They then
present it to the class and are video taped. They LOVE watching themselves
on tape.

Best,

Kim
