Conferencing is the best thing for my class. Students have to have
one-on-one conferencing. Additionally, all work is submitted online or
in a way I can access it on my computer, I use email, Moodle and also
a thumbdrive. I use Microsoft Word and the commenting option, so any
annotations are saved! I then use the notated copy with my kids for
revising. However, we have a "Silly Mistakes" checklist that we, (the
class), develop together. It includes things like capitalization,
indenting, double spacing.... ( we add to it as need be).
You will always have a few that are quite capable and still do
not edit or revise the way they should. I have a tough love assignment
for them. Yes, I know you should not use "writing" as a punitive
measure, however, this tough love assignment, ( A work sheet where
they have to hand write the original, sentence by sentence, and then
rewrite with corrections sentence by sentence again.) has provided a
worthwhile way to get those quite capable writers to do their best. I
have only given it to about 3 students in the last seven years but I
never had a proofreading problem with them again. Of course I have
them for all three of their middle school years so it is easy to keep
track!
