In the very popular HOUSE OF NIGHT series of
vampire novels, the authors plagiarized, putting
a passage from a New Age website into the mouth
of the Cherokee protagonist, presenting the New
Age practice as a Cherokee practice.
Here's the page where I noted the plagarism:
http://americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com/2009/12/did-pc-and-kristin-cast-plagiarize.html
A facebook fan page found my analysis and posted
it to their fan page. Fans soundly defended the
Cast mother/daughter team. Here's some examples:
Sarah said: i don't think that was really
plagiarism the books are based on a religion and
is common knowledge to those who are of the religion common knowledge stuff
Deepshikha said: Interesting. It doesn't seem
like they meant to "plagiarize", merely tried to
be exact in their research and information and it resulted in close wording.
Laurie said: I don't see the issue. They have
vast knowledge of the topic. So what??
Amber said: I would rather read a copy of a rite
than a false one. So, thank you for not
slandering the Cherokee nation and Shamanic
rituals. I love your books and can't wait for the
others to come out! HURRY! lol
Kelci said: In the words of Zoey, BULL POOPIE.
Those are just facts. I'm sure that she either
already knew these things, or when she looked
them up she put them in like that to help people
understand smudging rituals. I don't think she plagerized at all.
