I disagree, IRIS being an actual geospatial library with an overview
written just needs some more work and clarification. I can see that there
is a newer version 1.6 (7.0 had 1.4). What's not clear is if the
matplotlib can use a later version.
Most deps listed on
http://scitools.org.uk/iris/docs/latest/installing.html
say "or later" but not all of them do.
It is listed in the optional section, so I think modifying IRIS install to
allow newer should work.
