S.&P. 500 Off 7.7%; Dow Industrials Down 700 Points
Stricken investors worried about spreading problems in the
credit markets bid stocks down sharply across the board, with
major indexes falling more than 7 percent by midafternoon.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell below 9,600, its lowest
level in more than five years, with 90 minutes left in the
trading session.
