Contrary to earlier media reports the crisis in Mumbai remains
unresolved.

21h50 AFP reporting - Commandos have rescued 39 people trapped inside
the Oberoi/Trident hotel and "mopping-up operations" go on, quoting
Indian police.

21h16 An AFP correspondent hears two "loud explosions" near the Jewish
centre in Mumbai where militants are believed to be still holed
up. "The blasts were heard coming from an area inside Nariman House,"
the correspondent adds.

Foreign Minister Stephen Smith says around 26 Australians may be
trapped in Mumbai hotels as the fighting between terrorists and Indian
commandos continues at locations around the city. Speaking in London
this morning, Mr Smith said he was unable to confirm reports that a
second Australian had died in the coordinated attacks, which claimed
more than 125 lives. But the Federal Government says eye-witness
reports suggest that a second Australian has been killed.

Indian security officials say they have almost completed their
operation to reclaim the five-star Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and have
killed the last three militants who were holed up there. Survivors told
how their rooms were rocked by grenade blasts, but they were rescued by
commandos who went from room to room with a master key to free those
who had been stranded for almost 24 hours. But commandos are continuing
their operation to flush out terrorists at the city's Oberoi-Trident
hotel, where scores of people are still believed to be trapped.

Mr Smith says officials are still trying to get in touch with other
Australians believed to still be inside the Taj and the Oberoi. "The
situation and events continue to unfold. It is very difficult to be
precise, but we fear as many as 25, 26 Australians could be in the
hotels," he said. "We do know that a number of Australians have got out
of the hotel, a small number, so it is very difficult to be precise."
Already one Australian, Sydney businessman Brett Gilbert Taylor, has
been confirmed dead.
