fatality rate of about 7 percent. The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918-19,
which killed an estimated 40 million worldwide, had a fatality rate of
about 2.5 percent.

The mortality rate of a condition is the proportion of people dying
during a given time interval
There could be several reasons for this and statistics could change
over time but you can now see why the UN declared a Global Emergency.
