Better yet, keep the oil/antifreeze/fuel out of the bilge.  Besides causing 
hose problems, it's illegal and someday the CG may nail you for it.

Thanks norm- lots of good info there.  I have had trouble with a section of 
exhaust hose (reinforced double wall Trident brand hose) going soft after 
continual immersion in oily/propylene glycol/diesel bilge water (before I 
bought the boat). 
 
Basically it soaks up the stuff into the rubber pores and the rubber turns into 
a soft soggy sponge.  From what I have seen, the intake hose we are talking 
about looks like the same basic material and construction.  

I will probably trust the ABYC and go with what they recommend (I think they 
also recommend clean bilges).
