Hi, I have no experience in high latitude sailing other than living at a tad
over 57N. I use a Sig propane heater in my Bristol 35 which works well other
than using lots of fuel, but I do not live aboard and mostly do day sailing
in the winter. I was going to get a diesel heater but the sales people
talked me out if it because they put out more heat than I could tolerate in
my small saloon.

I think the book you were talking about tis "North To The Night" by Alvah
Simon, ISBN 0-7679-0446-X. Great book but I think maybe it cleared my
thoughts on trying to winter over in the Arctic.

A couple of years ago a wooden schooner from Norway or Sweden spent the
winter here in Sitka after doing the NW passage from East to West. Great
boat, crew of 6 interesting Scandinavian adventurers. I think they were
headed for the southern oceans next.
