I know of people in several marinas that have been boarded. The last marina I
was in, in the Keys was visited by a combo of federal, state & local officers
at 11:30pm on a week night a few months after I left. They boarded boats,
chked holding tanks, thru hulls & flushed dye thru heads. They made 1 person
go topsides & replace his expired state registration sticker immediately or be
written a citation. He had his new sticker, but had neglected to put it on the
hull. Of course this was followed by a visit from the state DEP a month or so
later ticketing dockside showers running directly into the water!!!
The visit was supposedly part of a complete sweep of live aboard boats in the
Keys (in anchorages & marinas) due to high e-coli readings on the reef. You
know... out where the cruise ships dump, while completely ignoring the run off
from all the salt water filled septic systems from all the houses & businesses
(there is no sewer system) & run off from the golf course! Could have also
been due to a pissing contest between the owners of adjacent marina properties
or a neighbor in a house on the shared canal, who has made it her mission to
shut down the marina, despite the fact it was there long before she was! (How
sad)
Whatever the reason... others should be aware that they DO board boats in
marinas in the middle of the night for un-provoked (by the boat owner)
potty-checks.
---snip---
Boats in marinas are rarely attacked. In the fifteen years I spent in marinas
before slipping the docklines for good, I never knew of any boat that was
boarded and inspected by authorities for marine sanitation law compliance. If
you pay for dockage, protection money (called "taxes"), is included in the dock
fee.
The "Potti Problem" is a large point of leverage used to attack the anchored
boat community. This is why we seek toilet facilities that are completely
legal. If it were possible for the Air Head to discharge urine overboard
legally somehow and earn the Type I MSD designation (as the Lectra-San has) it
would be a huge step in that direction.
