I passed through Gloucester, MA last week on a yacht delivery (a Hinckley Pilot
35) from Southwest Harbor, ME to Marion, MA and was surprised to see a large
yacht anchored just where Bandersnatch usually lies when visiting that port. I
came alongside and suggested to the captain that he should be gone by the time
Norm arrives north (he confirmed that he was there for only a short time -
Norm, you're safe).
The trijp was somewhat eventful is that we lost all of our fresh water due to
improperly secured hose clamps on a new hot water heater and, more importantly,
lost our engine due to an improperly installed RACOR filter element (the spacer
was omitted) -- both due to work performend by Hinckley while the boat was
there in brokerage. I guess that $80/hour mechanics aren't what they used to
be when they now work for a large corporation. Very disappointing to see the
decrease in the quality of work from a formerly top yard. I assume they still
make good boats (for upwards of $1M).
The good news is that, after sailing into Gosport Harbor (Isles of Shoals) due
the engine failure, I receive superb assistance from the skipper of the
"Sakonnet", the Star Island Hotel's service boat. Not only did he tow me to a
new mooring (I had picked up his mooring under sail as simply the most
convenient), but he delivered some diesel fuel to allow us to prime the Racor
after disassembly and cleaning. When I asked him if he could spare a quart of
diesel, he offerred that he had several thousand gallons in a tank ashore at
the hotel. I will bring him an appropriate gift when I am next there in a
week or two.
By the way - I hit some the worst seas I have ever seen coming out of the Cape
Cod Canel into Buzzards Bay on the way to Marion. I have made that trip over
25 times, and this was by far the worst. We had 30 MPH wnds against a 4 knot
current which created 6-8 foot standing waves in the channel and no way to go
except directly into them. Great fun.
This is why I enjoy sailing on other people's boats.
