My inverter, a Trace 2.5KW 12 VDC unit, when presented with 120 vac input
available, ruminates for about 20 seconds, then there is a relay click, and
the input power is available. I belive the machine synchronizes itself to
the input voltage, then connects the input power to the inverter's output
power. If this is so, then the answer is NO, the inverter does not serve
as an isolation transformer since there is a direct connect via the relay
between ships 120 vac and input 120 vac.

The unit has several transformers that are microprocessor controlled in a
way to produce a stepped output that looks like a Mayan Temple or stepped
pyramid approximating a sine wave, but in no way acts as a isolation
transformer. The power is supplied to the transformers from the 12 VDC
input, the 120 vac input does not go through them.
