Since the thread is already running, I have another problem I need help with.
I have a 25 KW, two bearing, three-phase ac alternator I can belt drive from my propeller shaft. I have connected the output stators in such a way as to produce single phase power. This derates the output to 20 KW. It is a brushless type alternator. AC is applied to an small exciter stator, is picked up by a similar exciter rotor, rectified by some diodes and used to magnetize the main rotor. Output ac is generated in the main stator coils as the magnetic fields created in the rotor go by. Output voltage regulation is accomplished by a semiconductor regulator unit sensing output voltage and sending the appropriate power to the exciter stator. I want to use this device as a motor, driven by my single phase 8 KW genset, to use as a "get-home" device. (I sure wish the genset could output three phase!) I envision first disconnecting the regulator. Then connecting the shaft generator output to the genset output. Then, using a Variac, slowly increasing the exciter stator power. If it works with the belt off, I would put the belt on with neutral pitch, then add pitch (load). Any comments?
