Hi,
No tips or questions right now - just wanted to share the joy
of Live Aboard cruising.
We wanted to say hi to our friends on the live aboard list from
Block Island. This is my wife and my first trip here, though we
read about the place several times on email lists over the last
decade that I was in Des Moines. We were in a nice marina
on the Conn River for a visit to my son & trip back to Iowa
for some legal work.
We finally got Angel Louise out of her $40 a day marina.
Skipper Bob, observed cruising with his wife for 14 years
in retirement said that marinas are budget busters. We agree.
Though we liked the Chrisholm marina in Chester CT
and felt sad at saying goodbye to my son and their two little pirate
spuds, we were happy to have Angel Louise under way on big water
from Long Island Sound out to Block Island.
Block Island it is beautiful with 100s of boats all
on holiday. This Island is less than ten miles from the
shores of Rhode Island and there are many folks from
NEWPORT, which is a white gloves yacht club kind
of place, and ports all up and down the east coast
from the Hamptons, up to Marthas Vinyard, and Maine
ports.
We stopped at on the Connecticut River at Essex, CT
for 42.9 gallons of diesel @$5 per gal (for a sailing
Catamaran we use a lot of fuel - and often tell folks
we really have a squashed trawler, but we love her.
We left the Connecticut River by 10 am which was pretty good
considering we stopped for fuel too, and had to wait for a
RR Bridge to lift after the AMTRAK Acella fast train passed.
We were worried that the forecast called for Thunderstorms.
Later they upgraded that to a warning for severe thunderstorms
(with 70 mph winds, 1 1/2 in hail, and damaging lightning)
going all the way up to and just past our route for a
part of our travel on LI Sound.
We gambled they might not develop & that we could get
by them. We seriously considered waiting another day
anchoring somewhere down river to wait out the cold front -
but in the end pushed on. We got hit with less serious weather
though, winds of up to 33 miles per hour and heavy rain -
no lightening hit us and no hail developed.
Finally after an end to plowing into adverse currents and tides
much of the way, we made it to quaint historical Block Island,
and after we anchored, it later cleared up. 350 or more boats
are here and we plan to enjoy this for the full week.
There is a lot for Sue and I to discover. We have already
twice hailed the boat with the baker yelling ANDIAMO ! !
Blueberry turn overs last night and Cinnamon rolls this
morning.
We are headed out to explore the Island and will be
anchored here all week.
