Neal,

I don't know if the 4-236 starter is the same as the 4-107/108, but here goes.

We had the same problem when we first bought 'Valkyrie'. Luckily the
PO had a spare starter, which did and is working fine after more than a year..

This starter is reminiscent of the old Ford long shaft starter. It
has a mechanical Bendix. If the starter spins up with that nice
whine, the solenoid is fine and the starter motor is fine.

The Bendix on our old starter also appeared to throw out when run on
the bench. I couldn't see any reason why it was not working. I hate
to admit I've been trying to get a roundtuit to bring the old one to
a shop for rebuild and stow it as a spare. This has worked several
times in the past, after unsuccessfully trying various things to fix it myself.

I know what you mean about getting to the @[EMAIL PROTECTED] thing!! I had to
use
a couple feet of rachet wrench extension to totally remove/replace
the nuts, and reach one-handed to get it off/on. Good thing I have long arms!!

Rick
