Some links - 12 doesn't sound nearly enough - I have 10 on mine for a
shorter run from my high-voltage panels....

http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm shows a 4V drop with 12 at 50',
with only 7.9 being delivered, at 8, 1.6/10.4

However, if you have a higher voltage panel, using mppt controller, likely
you're putting in more like 18V, which helps (and is another reason to use
the higher voltage panels.  That changes the equation; the first link will
allow you to calculate - the second only has 48 as the next up from 12V...
