John,
The capacitor wired to the positive output of an alternator has nothing to do
with 'exiting' the alternator. It is placed there to reduce radio frequency
interference caused by the alternator.
Install it on the new alternator for that reason,

Subject: [Liveaboard] Thanks and a additional question

  Dear List

Thank you for all your help, very good counsel. We have one additional
question. The old alternator had a capacitor wired to the positive post of the
alternator, presumably to "excite" the alternator. In replacing the alternator
should I wire in this capacitor in again or does a new alternator not need one.
In the wiring diagrams of the new alternator it does not show a capacitor.
Thanks ahead for all the help

  John Miami
