UPDATES FOR ELECTRONIC CHARTS
AUGUST 15, 2008 - MARCH 15, 2009

The new 2009 edition of Managing the Waterway: Complete Electronic Chart and 
Nautical Reference Library was issued in January.


These include numerous updates to the 3,000-plus charts and the nearly 200 
nautical publications. Additionally, ten new publications were added in 2009:


- Atlas of Pilot Charts: South Pacific Ocean Pub. 107
- Atlas of Pilot Charts: Indian Ocean Pub. 109
- Chart No. 1 and Encoding Guide: USACE Inland Electronic Navigational Chart
- Handbook of Compass Adjustment
- Sight Reduction Tables for Air Navigation Pub 249 (3 Volumes)
- The (CIA) World Factbook
- World Magnetic Variation Charts (World and United States detail)


To date, no electronic chart files have been recalled by NOAA or the USACE 
since January.

UPDATES FOR GET ONBOARD WITH E-CHARTING

EarthNC now includes Bahamas chart coverage (http://earthnc.com/bahamas).


DigiBOAT Software-On-Board added a race start function, wind polar generation, 
and GPX waypoint support (www.digiboat.com.au).


Fugawi MarineENC launched X-Traverse, a web service that allows you to save, 
retrieve and move data (such as waypoints) across mobile and desktop 
applications (www.x-traverse.com).


Rose Point Navigation launched Coastal Explorer 2009 in February 
(www.rosepointnav.com/coastalexplorer). Coastal Explorer 2009 now includes 
support for Navionics S-57/S-63 charts. A new subscription service, Coastal 
Explorer Network (about $100/year), provides automatic U.S. chart updates, 
weather forecasts, a community guide book, blogs, and program updates 
(http://coastalexplorer.net).


RayTech RNS version 6.1 was released as projected (www.raymarine.com). This new 
version supports AIS.


The U.S. release of MaxSea Time Zero has been pushed back until summer or fall 
2009.


A new version of Parallels Desktop, version 4.0, has been released 
(www.parallels.com).


MacENC, GPSNavX and iNavX integrate with Fugawi X-Traverse, allowing waypoint 
data transfer between mobile and desktop applications over the Internet 
(www.inavx.net).


XM WX Satellite Weather has combined its mid-tier weather data packages, 
Fisherman and Sailor, to create the Pilot data package, available in March 2009.


The National Weather Service is no longer updating nor printing Marine Service 
Charts (MSCs). Weather radio information is now posted online at 
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/.

p. 31 - The Jordan Bridge at STM 2.7 has been decommissioned and left in the 
open position. Cross out the restricted schedule and change the third line to 
“Lift; vertical 15 feet; decommissioned and left in open position.”


p. 32 - The Norfolk Southern RR Bridge at STM 5.8 is under construction and 
will be closed from 0500 to 2300 on Sundays April 5, April 12, May 3, and May 
10, 2009.


p. 33 - Pungo Ferry Marina at STM 28.4 (and its popular buffet, Captain 
George’s Seafood Restaurant) has closed and is for sale.


p. 55 - The Figure Eight Island Bridge at STM 278.1 has requested a change in 
its restricted opening schedule to once an hour on the half-hour. The change is 
pending approval by the Coast Guard but readers should be aware that this 
change may go into effect over the next few months.


p. 57- Carolina Beach State Park Marina at STM 297.0 is closed for renovation, 
scheduled for completion and re-opening in fall 2009.


p. 59 - A new 65-foot fixed bridge is under construction at mile STM 316.6. Add 
an entry:
South (Second) Oak Island Bridge
Fixed; vertical 65 feet.


71 - A new 90-foot fixed bridge is completed at STM 348.8. Add an entry:
North Myrtle Beach Connection Bridge
(Main Street Connection Bridge)
Fixed, vertical 90 feet.


p. 78 - The directions for Charleston Maritime Center at STM 464.5 should read 
“Proceed NW...” rather than “Proceed SW...”


p. 78 - Ripley Light Yacht Club now accepts transient boaters. Ripley Light 
Marina has a fuel dock but no transient dockage. At STM 469.2, change the entry 
for Ripley Light Marina to:
Ripley Light Marina (0.7)
VHF 16; 843/766-2100
Marina is to port. No transient dockage.
Fuel dock is active, in charted 10-foot canal.


And add an entry:
Ripley Light Yacht Club (0.7)
VHF 16; 843/766-0908
Yacht club is to starboard.

p. 100 - Skidaway Narrows Bridge at STM 592.4 now again reads correctly as 
0630-0900. Disregard any previous updates with restricted hours of 0700-0900.


p. 122 - The B.B. McCormick Twin Bridges at STM 747.4 are being replaced by a 
fixed 65-foot bridge, still under construction with a revised completion date 
of March 2009.


p. 127 - Daytona Marina & Boat Works at STM 831.2 was purchased and is now 
doing business as Aquamarina Daytona. The telephone number is unchanged.


p. 140 - Southport Anchorage and mooring field, up the St. Lucie River from STM 
987.8, remains closed due to redevelopment construction, possibly not to 
re-open until summer 2009.


p. 158 - The Dinner Key mooring field at STM 1094.3 has a revised targeted 
completion date of July 2009.

p. 18 - Many cruisers are reporting unusually low water depths on the Florida 
Bay route. Before choosing this route over the Hawk Channel route, consult with 
local marinas and consider the draft of your vessel.


p. 32 - The Dinner Key mooring field at STM 1094.3 has a revised targeted 
completion date of July 2009.


p. 52 - The demolition of the old drawbridge at Jewfish Creek at STM 1134.1 is 
complete. Replace the entry with:
Jewfish Creek Bridge
Fixed; vertical 65 feet.


p. 88 - A new marina has opened at the eastern end of Boot Key Harbor and is 
providing dinghy dockage to access the Publix-Kmart shopping plaza. At STM 
1196.3, below the entry for Sombrero Marina, add the entry:
Hurricane Hole Marina (4.3)
No VHF        N24.42.529
305/797-3877        W081.05.005
Marina is to SE.
Transient dockage and $5/day dinghy dockage for anchoring or mooring vessels.
