Hi Sam,

There are lots of anchorages around the Keys,
especially with a no-nothing draft such as yours!
In the Keys, you don't need to locate an anchor
marked on the charts to find an anchorage. It's
so easy to find a place to settle for the night and
just do so.

That's the beauty of shallow waters (and shallow
drafts make it all the easier). Bayside is lovely
and much calmer this time of year than Oceanside.

Lignumvitae Key, Indian Key, historic and lovely
with a very few complimentary mooring balls; Bahia
Honda is a must if you haven't done it in a while.
Lovely, quaint, huge park area for biking, walking,
running...snorkeling and beaches, etc.

In short, look to the State Parks for some really
nice anchorages with wonderful amenities. Else,
you can always find a little spot here or there that's
totally quiet and sans cruisers--especially so on
Bayside.

By all means, stay outside to avoid the bridges
at Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. If you go all the
way through Biscayne Bay you can exit to the
outside right there at Miami Beach. You'll be
glad you did! 'bella tells ya right!

Take a look at my website, Sam. "Adventures"
section has a number of areas of interest. If you
have any questions about a particular area, please
let me know.

The winter nasties are not quite gone...so be careful
out there. We've been blowing a gale regularly
down here. Never have had quite as cool a winter or
Nor'easter-laden one as this one. But then again...
that's s'ok!

And YES! When you get down this way please
let me know! It'd be wonderful to see ya Sam!

Big Hugs,

Charmaine

Preparing to bring Lady of the Lake back around to Melbourne from SW
Florida. Brought her over via the Okeechobee Waterway but have the time
to bring her back through the Keys. Looking for recommendations of
places to visit, specifically anchorages. Also interested in a proposed
path through the Keys including where we should cross over to the
outside to avoid Miami and Ft. Lauderdale bridges. Want to be outside
prior to that mess but not sure if we cross over in the Keys or wait
until Biscayne Bay. Opinions are appreciated.

BTW, in case there are any limitations, she is:

47 ft air draft
2 ft 10 inch draft
18 ft 3 inch beam

Thanks in advance,
Sam

Dito on that... the anchorage to the immed south and east of the bridge..
just outside the channel into boot
key proper is most excellent...
last trip up to miami..we dropped the hook amid crab pots on the backside of

the the channel 5 bridge.. no one
but us...
don't know your depth.. but coming out of the channel 5 channel do not cut
the corners...

NO idea where in SW Fla you are..but one can make Boot Key from Cape Romano
in a LONG day sail...
use the Bullard bank light as one waypoint..

coming north from channel 5... Rodriguez Key another overnighter.... then
hit the west side of Key Biscayne.. you can
anchor outside No Name Harbor.. it gets a bit rolly about 4am what with the
charter boats going out but it is deep...
OR you can run across Biscayne Bay under the MacArthur Causeway bridge hang
a right into the watson key
anchorage... IF you want to avoid the bridges leave back out under the
MacArthur and out Gov't Cut... left/north past
Fort Liquordale and you are home free...
can I be jealous? great time of the year to be sailing in the keys... just
warm enough to comfortable and past the winter nasties...

It is currently 49 degrees here... (sighs....)
