Hi, Ken,

Knife slashes won't succumb to goop put inside the tube - just small leaks.

However, even a severe cut can be dealt with successfully if you follow what
I did when I was an inflatable dock dealer and some inboard missed the heavy
rubber mat in the center (ski boats have skegs under the engine, very
sharp)...

Cut the cut long enough, and add end cuts to make it look like an "I" or
"H", so that you can get your fingers inside. Clean and prep just as you
would for a patch. Put some waxed paper inside so the goop doesn't stick to
the other side of the tube. Put a large enough patch (both tube and patch
well sanded and glued) that you'd have otherwise used on the outside, make
sure the edges are flush, then make sure to roll it out well (chair caster,
wallpaper seam roller, screen bead inserter, even a bottom of a mayo jar,
will do) - really lean on it - you want to drive any possible bubbles out.

The pressure will be on the patch rather than the hole when it's done. If
you're nervous, put one on the top after the inside has had the appropriate
time to cure - but I never did. If you have the access, and the clamps (I
have many aboard), use wood clamps (the kind with opposing handles which you
twist, allowing parallel or non-parallel surfaces to be clamped) tightly
against each other as belt-and-suspenders. Leave it alone for much longer
than recommended, as there will be NO air intrusion to speed the cure when
you have it clamped that way - but you'll have bonded the materials together
and it ain't going ANYWHERE...

FWIW, the appropriate cleaner/prep for hypalon is MEK, not acetone. It will
slightly soften the fabric, making a very good bond, particularly if you use
the two-part glue.

Skip, with more scrapes on the bottom than would respond to conventional
patching (at least not without going crazy), and those previously leaking
are successfully sealed, but the time will come where other scrapes will
leak, thus the original post...
