That comment reminds me of one of my favorite captains from my Merchant Marine days, Captain John, a Greek.
He would occasionally comment on some problem shoreside type as a "shoemaker" with mild disgust. When I asked him where this came from he told me a story about the time he first entered seamanship school in Greece. The Chief Instructor addressed the new students and pointed out that the profession they had chosen was not an easy one, with long schooling, great responsibilities and years away from their families. He went on to suggest that shoemaking would be a better choice, providing a decent income with job stability and a real family life. Apparently John divided the world into seaman types, with whom he could deal with, and shoemakers, with whom he had difficulty.
