That's what coastal cruising is all about, for lots of people. We just
started cruising again this year, but it's been a much slower process
than we planned: I had a bunch of work come along (which means a week
away from the boat for each instance), and we also had a baby in the
middle of it all. That kind of thing slows you down. :)

In general, though, there are lots of folks doing exactly what you
describe. I don't think it would work well on the West Coast, where the
anchorages are few and far between, but the East Coast is (so far)
reasonably OK. For myself, I much prefer the Caribbean - but that wasn't
going to happen this year, so here we are.

I've been living aboard since 1991, and cruising (with some long pauses
here and there) since 1993. I love it, and wouldn't trade it for
anything else. In fact, when Google contacted me with a job offer a
while back, I sat down and did the numbers, and figured out that they'd
have to pay me $300k a year just to match the quality of life that I
have now (and nothing they could offer would match the freedom.) I'm not
planning on swallowing the hook any time soon.
