Everything I am saying is MY opinion from MY experiences. It is not meant
to hurt feelings nor am I not an expert. My experiences are from walking
around marinas and from sitting on our boat at anchor.

with that being said ....

I can't say much about other wind generators, except for those I have had
the experience with. when we were up/down wind or sitting next to the boat
with it. I have heard KISS generators and the ones I heard were not very
quiet. I do not know the models or the years that they were made. But they
seemed to have a whistle to them. Some have sounds like you are standing
next to a wind tunnel.

An Air-X sounds like a wind turbine.

In the defense of the above mentioned wind generators, I do not know how
long they had been in service, if they had been recently service, balanced
blades or unbalanced blades. (This can make a big difference in sounds).

I can talk some about ours. It is a _Fourwinds_
(http://www.fourwinds-ii.com/v2/?c=generators&i=fwII) located in Punta Gorda,
FL. It is VERY quiet.
You cannot hear it even when you are sitting underneath it. If I had to say
it had a sound to it, then the only sound it has is like someone blowing
softly into your ear. On top of that, ours starts turning with about 2-3
knots of wind. (Other wind generators need about 5 or more knots to start

But one BIG drawback ... it is very expensive, around $2200. But we felt
it has been worth it.

The wind generators I have heard have all had some sort of sound to them.
You have to decide how much noise you can handle hearing and how many
friends you want to have in the anchorage.

It looks like my old wind generator may finally be ready to be replaced.
It's a Rutland Model 910, Mk 2 and after I had a shop replace the bearings
and reassembled the hub halves, it drags quite badly. I don't know if the
stator is warped or if the shop somehow did something to cause it to drag,
but I'm debating replacing it rather than throw more money at it.

Anyway, ideas on the above would be appreciated, but I really wanted to
hear any recommendations or brands to stay away from. I'll have to get one
with a fairly small diameter, say 43" or less in order to avoid having to
re-do my pole.

Thanks,
