Hi, and thanks for the link. Very interesting reading.

Among the very interesting parts was this:

"toxin concentrations are highest in large, predatory fish such as
barracuda, grouper, amberjack, snapper, and shark."

Hello...

With the exception of Barracuda, every one of those is readily commercially
available, and, in most cases, delicacies at finer restaurants.

What are we to make of those who sell them, in light of the above?

Meanwhile, reading the case studies, three of the four cited cases had no
long-term effects, one was a fisherman with a very interesting side effect,
but being a fisherman, knew what was happening and sought no medical
treatment (as did another - that is, no medical treatment sought - in the
report), and so on.

I found it interesting that symptom onset was between a few hours and a few
days, hardly consistent between cases.

I also found it significant that the Texas cases were drawn from those
fishing the oil rigs, tantamount to my fishing the snorkeling areas with all
the pretty fish down there.

And, that, over whatever period the study was done, only 4 cases were found
by the CDC seems more to show that the exception proves the rule...

Ya pays ye'r money and takes ye'r chances...

Meanwhile, anectdotally, locally, we chatted up a cruiser with a friend who
apparently had symptoms; same cruiser asserted there's a ready remedy
(antitoxin?), but I've never heard of any such thing.

Anyone here know of such remedy?

Meanwhile, we continue to be vigilant. I have no idea what the above "LARGE
predatory fish" means. Is that over 4' - 6' - 8', or some other length
metric, and, ditto, some weight (which would seem to make more sense to me).

A 4' shark is impressive to board. A 4' grouper is pretty heavy. A 4'
barracuda is (at least in my limited experience) not all that common. For
Barry, at least, we'll continue to use the 30" rule, as well as make sure
we're not near a reef area...
