I'm trying to edit some music gig videos. I need to hear the soundtrack
to know where to cut the video, but when I do play->all or play
selection it just gives me a brief (fraction of a second) snatch of
sound a fraction of a second after the video starts playing, then nothing.

I've checked that I've got Play->Mute not muted, and played around with
(Auto)Loop video to fit audio track (which I don't understand).

Also play->all only plays a few frames, which seem to be starting after
whatever I've got the current 'pointer' set to. I guess that's intentional?

I'm running on Debian Lenny.
The info window at the bottom of my lives screen says:

Regarding the warning message above:
$ ls -al ~/.lives-dir
total 16

drwxr-xr-x 137 john john 12288 2010-09-26 10:50 ..

The icons on the Lives window (and in the Play window) for

    show the play window
    Play selection
    switch continuous looping on
    Mute the audio

are just blank sort of default icons like a page with the corner turned
over and a red x in the middle.
